The 2007 NibCrom Central Awards - Movies
April 6, 2007

Honorable Mentions:

Little Miss Sunshine
Too often with independent films, while the premise is interesting and the characters are well-written, the film itself leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This was not the case with Little Miss Sunshine. It honestly made me smile, not just during the movie, but afterwards as well. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments in Little Miss Sunshine, too many to not appreciate the film.

Nacho Libre
The strength of Nacho Libre lies in the uniqueness of the film. While there is certainly a Napoleon Dynamite influence in both the script and cinematics, the title character's story is fresh and funny. Even as Jack Black improvises songs like he so often does, the character is so different from anything else that you can't help but laugh.

This Years Winners:

The Star Wars Trilogy
For a while, the original theatrical versions of the Original Star Wars Trilogy were never going to see the light of day on DVD, and of course their was a great number of fans that felt this should not be the case. I was one of them. After some time and thousands of fans signing the petition, Lucasfilm seemingly cracked and announced they would be releasing the original versions on DVD for a limited time. The fans rejoiced until more news surfaced: the DVD versions of the Original Trilogy would not be remastered versions of the films, but taken from the laserdiscs and presented in non-anamorphic format.

Now you may be thinking I would be one of the fans who was outraged at this news. I'm not. The fact is that I find the Special Edition versions of the films to be much better than their original theatrical version counterparts. There is nothing wrong with the original theatrical versions, but I much prefer seeing the updated special effects over the visuals that were limited by 1977 technology.

I really like Star Wars. I like the original theatrical versions and I like the special edition versions too. I'm glad I finally have both on DVD, and I'm not going to be mad that the version I watch on DVD looks or sounds any worse than they did when they were first released to theaters.

X3 - The Last Stand
I'm not really sure why so many people disliked X3. It may not have been as good as the second X-Men film, but that is an admittedly hard act to follow. All of the mutants were great onscreen, especially the returning Professor X and Magneto. There were plenty of great moments in this film, and while I may have changed some of them had I made the movie, I know I'm going to be watching X3 again and again as the years go by.

Movie of the Year:

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe
While this film was released in theaters in 2005, the DVD didn't come out until 2006, making it eligible for this years awards. I didn't actually read the book this film was based on until after I saw the movie, but Narnia does it's source material justice, and then some. It's been a while since I have seen a film that I would not have changed anything about it. The filmmakers just really nailed it.
